We are consumers of art, culture, media, drugs, technology, even sexuality is a commodity. Strip away the consumption, and we are left with next to nothing. This emptiness is the general malaise of our consumerist society. We strive for a perpetual state of happiness, and consequently we are addicted to the dopamine rush that consumption provides us like a drug fiend. However, this drug-induced consumption frenzy does not equal happiness.
Consumerist culture breaks down all the possible colors and variations in life into what is essentially a product. We have hundreds of TV channels all showing the same bullshit, high gloss magazines that promise you a better sex life, inept musicians making a killing, medications for almost any illness you can think of, and it goes on and on. Only the imaginative, the perceptive, the curious, the adventurous, and those who strive in a Faustian sense can see through the sheer vapidity of it all.
